Get Litty in Elizabeth City

With a lovely harbor facing the Pasquotank River, Elizabeth City, near the northeastern tip of North Carolina, exudes calming vibes and scenic sights. While famous for its connections to moonshining and the Wright Brothers' first flights in nearby Kill Devil Hills, Elizabeth City has a rich musical heritage, contributing to jazz history and offering plenty of spots to catch live music.

From the gospel, bluegrass, and folk roots highlighted at the Museum of the Albemarle to the dynamic performances at Arts of the Albemarle and the College of the Albemarle, the city pulses with rhythm. Summer’s Music on the Green concert series livens up the waterfront, while fall’s River City Rhythm and Brews festival pairs local bands with craft beer. Jazz legend Max Roach was born in nearby Newland, and jazz critic A.B. Spellman, author of the famous Four Lives in the Bebop Business, was born and raised in Elizabeth City. Music's a big deal in this small town.

Suggested Music-Themed Day Trip Itinerary*

Morning

From before Handel’s time to after Otis Redding’s, water has provided inspiration, analogy, and content for countless classics. So kick off your day anywhere along N. Water Street—you’ll find the Pasquotank easeful and mellifluous.

Then, make your way down Main Street to see the Max Roach mural by Scott Nurkin, part of the NC Musician Murals Trail. Roach is one of the most influential and significant percussionists in jazz history. From bebop to free jazz, he set foundational blueprints that have been studied, imitated, and adapted by countless musicians. Though an NC native, Roach spent his toddler years in nearby Newland before moving to Brooklyn.

Take in the fantastic mural, and if you have headphones, throw on Miles Davis’ Birth of the Cool (featuring Roach on drums), his protest record with Abbey Lincoln We Insist!, or his free jazz masterpiece M’Boom on Strata-East.
